Go ahead and Quit

Go Ahead and Quit
Smoking, that is! Listen, I have vices just like everybody else, but smoking is something you are NEVER going to be able to keep up alongside an active fitness regimen. If you're a heavy smoker who has ever tried to do an intense cardio session, you know what I'm talking about.

But the risks of smoking go a lot further than a little trouble on the treadmill. I've been talking a lot about the American Cancer Society's current campaign, the Great American Health Challenge. The Society is educating Americans on four ways to significantly reduce their cancer risk: Check, Move, Nourish, and Quit. In other words: Get the appropriate cancer screenings for your age, gender, and family history, maintain an active lifestyle, eat a healthy diet, and; I bet you've already guessed it; quit smoking.

The ACS estimates that last year nearly 170,000 cancer deaths in the United States alone were caused by tobacco. Later this year the ACS will hold its annual Great American Smokeout, which challenges and inspires smokers to quit for good by highlighting the dangers of tobacco use. But there's no reason to wait until November to put out that cigarette. The sooner you quit, the greater the benefit. It's that simple.

That's not to say it's easy; few things are that really make a difference in our health. But the Society has thought of that too; they have created Quitline, a toll-free confidential counseling service you can call for support anytime you need it. So no excuses!
