Teach Healthy Eating Habits!

Did you know that as a parent, you are the most important role model for good nutrition and healthy living in your child's life? Make sure you're sending the right messages! Don't worry — it doesn't take much! Experts from the American Obesity Association advise:

  • Have everyone in the family eat healthy; not just those "with a weight problem."
  • Don't rush through meals!
  • Turn off distractions, like the television, while eating.
  • Don't make foods that are high in fat and calories a regular part of your diet.
  • Keep healthy, low-calorie snacks on hand. Limit access to unhealthy junk foods.
  • Don't overfeed children. Keep portion sizes in moderation!
  • Don't make eating an issue. Let hunger guide how much your child eats. If you notice he or she is not eating enough on a regular basis, or you think he or she is overweight, talk to your doctor.
  • Don't serve fast food more than once a week.
  • Don't use food as a reward or withhold or force food as a punishment.
