main meals | Tired of burgers? Tempeh (soybean cake), with its nutty flavor, provides a wonderful alternative to meat.
10 oz tempeh, sliced into sixteen 1/4-inch-thick pieces 1 medium onion(s), sliced 1 tsp sesame oil 1 cup barbecue sauce
Instructions
1. Steam tempeh for 20 minutes to prevent it from drying out when grilled. While tempeh is steaming, sauté onion in sesame oil over medium-high heat until very tender and golden, about 10 minutes. 2. Preheat grill. Brush tempeh slices with barbecue sauce and grill for 5 minutes on each side, brushing generously with sauce as it cooks. 3. Top tempeh with onions and serve with additional sauce on the side. Yields about four slices tempeh plus 1/4 cup onions per serving.
